As part of a plan to manage supply and demand throughout the seasonal peak period, Heathrow has decided not to impose any limits on the number of departing passengers passing through the airport during Christmas.

It is essential to work closely with airlines and ground handlers in order to ensure maximum capacity levels for the airport. It is noted by the airport that passenger traffic has increased from 74% year-to-date to 84% in October 2022.

Earlier this month, Heathrow warned that it may have to impose the limit on passengers that was first imposed in July as the airport struggled to cope with the surge in demand due to the aftermath of the pandemic. As a result, Heathrow instructed airlines to reduce passenger levels to a minimum, which led to a lot of flights being canceled or tickets no longer being sold.

According to the airport, it was working with airlines to arrange a "highly targeted mechanism" that would "align supply and demand on a few peak days in the lead-up to Christmas". That way, demand would be pushed into less busy times, protecting peak demand, and avoiding flight cancellations due to resource pressures.

According to Heathrow, the airport has taken on 16,000 new staff over the past 12 months, a record number which means they will achieve pre-pandemic staffing levels for next year's peak holiday period, bringing the airport up to pre-pandemic levels.

"The leisure market has been buoyant thanks to the half-term getaway, with our busiest day since July, and we are also seeing the gradual return of business travelers too," it adds. "Strong recovery in the Middle East and Central Asia seen in October is expected to continue into November."
