Malaysia Airports sees strong rebound in passenger numbers
Malaysia Airports' local operations recorded 35.2 million passenger movements in the first nine months, a strong rebound from just 4 million passengers in the same period of 2021.
The figure marks a 45% recovery against pre-pandemic 2019 levels, it says.
Passenger movements in Malaysia exceeded the 5 million mark for the first time since March 2020, reaching 5.3 million passengers in September.
In the same month, the group's Malaysia operations also recorded new highs in international and domestic load factors since the pandemic began, at 77% and 74% respectively.
The group's Turkish operations at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International airport registered 22.9 million total passenger movements during the period, against 17.9 million in 2021, and an 85% recovery against pre-pandemic levels.
For the period, the airport continued to show "promising trends in international passenger movements", recording 6.6% higher international passengers than pre-pandemic levels, which helped boost its earnings with their higher yields.
For the period, net loss for the group markedly narrowed by over 70% to MYR172 million ($38.4 million). Revenues came in at MYR2.12 billion, up 89% compared with the same period last year.
