World’s Largest Indian Aviation Market
The Indian aviation industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. There is a very large market and a very large number of consumers. In the past decade, it has been evident that there has been robust growth in the industry.
Witnessing the recent growth of the market, Jet Airways, formerly an industry giant, but now out of business due to huge financial losses, is returning to the market and is set to start its service by the end of 2022.
Also, there has been a lot of progress in the performance of the national carrier, Air India, over the past few months. After the Tata group took complete control of Air India in January 2022, there has been a marked improvement in key operational parameters of the airline.
India is currently considered to be the world's seventh largest aviation market, but within the next 10 years, the country is expected to become the world's third largest aviation market. It has been reported that Indian domestic traffic constitutes around 69% of all the airline traffic in the South Asian region.
As of the end of the financial year 2022, there were over 188 million passengers passing through airports across India, of which over 22 million were international passengers. India’s airport capacity is expected to handle 1 billion trips annually by 2023.
With a visible growing trend, it was estimated that by 2034, India would become one of the largest aviation markets in the world. India is expected to overtake China and the United States as the world's third-largest air passenger market in the next ten years, according to IATA.
The Indian market is home to more than ten commercial airlines that operate to more than 150 domestic airports within the country. As of 2022, IndiGo is dominating the domestic market with around 55% market share, following Spice Jet with 13%, and Air India with 9%.
Until its operation ceased in 2019, Jet Airways held the largest market share after IndiGo. The low-cost and no-frills approach of IndiGo has contributed to its relative success in India. It is estimated that the airline carried 48 million passengers for the FY 2021, according to Cirium.
Due to the growing demand in the sector, the amount of airplanes that are operating in that sector has also increased in recent years.
Boeing has predicted that over the next 20 years Indian airline operators will require over 2,000 new single-aisle aircraft to meet their needs. The company stated that Asia's air travel sector is likely to be dominated by the Indian market, which it expects to account for around 90% of passenger traffic in the region.
On the other hand,
Airbus stated, "India will require 2,210 new aircraft over the next 20 years. That fleet could comprise 1,770 new small and 440 medium and large aircraft."
"Over the next decade, India will grow to have the largest population in the world, its economy will grow the fastest among the G20 nations, and a burgeoning middle class will spend more on air travel. As a result, passenger traffic in India will grow at 6.2% per annum by 2040, the fastest among the major economies and well above the global average of 3.9%."
India is set to become the world's most populous country by the end of the decade, overtaking China, according to the latest edition of the United Nations' World Population Prospects. India's population is set to rise to 1.515 billion in 2030, from 1.417 billion in 2022.
The Indian Economy is buzzing and witnessing a growth trajectory that no other global economy is able to compete with. India provides a very good blend of a thriving domestic market opportunity & increasingly open regulatory environment. All these make India a favourite destination for global airlines that are looking to expand their footprint and create lasting business success.
With a huge population, India is possibly one of the biggest markets for world businesses. India has been amongst the fastest-growing economies in the world over the last decade. And it is likely to continue on a high growth path for the next decade or two. Also, the Indian market is far more open than other countries.
